Using your smartphone as a GPS on the trail is great, but can be frustrating because of the time it takes to lock onto your location in low or no-reception areas (iPhones and Androids mostly rely on cell towers to triangulate). The solution might be a Bad Elf. Bad Elf uses satellites for its GPS products to get your location quickly.
An emergency blanket, sometimes referred to as a first aid blanket, space blanket, Mylar, thermal or weather blanket, is used in emergencies to reduce heat loss in a person’s body caused by thermal radiation, water evaporation and convection. Many people think, since they have never needed one, that it’s a waste of space to put one in their pack, but this is a multi-use item that can serve so many more functions than it was designed for. When spending time outdoors I prefer to bring multi-use items to save space and weight. An emergency blanket has tons of uses.

Snowshoeing is a great way to stay in shape and enjoy the trails in the off season. Even though spring is just around the corner there’s still plenty of snow in the mountains and snow parks. Some Pacific Northwest forests even have fresh snow well into late April. If you haven’t been snowshoeing before here are some tips.

Why I like it: In a time when most of us are not in tune with where our food comes from, this will help you get close to nature, overcome food aversions (if you can eat bugs you can eat almost anything), practice survival skills, and it’s packed with high energy protein not to mention the cool factor for impressing others in your group or at least giving them something to talk about.
