A recent travel survey asked Americans what their top destinations were worldwide. I was shocked to see that the majority of them are city locations rather than natural destinations. I suppose “shocked” is too strong, but I am a backpacker after all and while I also count myself a traveler, this list is nowhere near my own. So I thought it would be interesting to see if other backpackers share my sentiment. But then I thought, maybe it’s not fair to pit the traveler in you against the backpacker in you (I can get over-thinky in a hurry). Instead, look at this list of top travel destinations as chosen by respondents to LivingSocial’s survey:

Top Ten Dream Destinations

When given their choice of dozens of world wonders to visit, Americans picked their top ten dream destinations as:

  • Great Barrier Reef, Australia
  • Eiffel Tower, France
  • Pyramids of Giza, Egypt
  • The Colosseum, Italy
  • Disney World, Florida, USA
  • Las Vegas, Nevada, USA
  • Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA
  • Buckingham Palace, London, UK
  • Leaning Tower of Pisa, Italy
  • Great Wall of China, China

Does this list come close to your own? How does it change if you only consider backpacking locations?

Now comes the fun part! Go to our Facebook page and list your favorite 5 destinations for backpacking anywhere in the world (location and country please). We’ll compile the list and let you know the top destinations! Thanks for playing!
