Cathedral Peak and Amphitheater Mountain, Pasayten Wilderness

Cathedral Peak and Amphitheater Mountain, Pasayten Wilderness

We just stopped there in awe, I was running all over like a 6 year old, taking pictures and exclaiming loudly how awesome a place it was. After running out of cool shit to say and taking maybe 200 pictures we saddled up to tackle the final two miles or so Cathedral Pass. The closer you get to Cathedral Peak the more you stop and stare. The southeast face of the peak is remarkably steep and actually looks out of place. The eastern Pasayten is better known for its rounded peaks than its jagged summits. This entire area looked more like it belonged in the Southwest than the Northwest!

The Road to Mt FitzRoy Patagonia

The Road to Mt FitzRoy Patagonia

Finally we rounded the northeast corner of Lago Viedma and turned west to our first views of the Andes, still flirting with a low cloud cover. Glaciar Viedma (one of the largest glaciers draining the Heilo Sur or South Patagonian Ice Sheet) was a small tongue of blue-white at the other end of the grey-blue lake.

Ghoripani Trek, Nepal

Ghoripani Trek, Nepal

Naya Pul sits on the edge of a winding river, and the trail was connected with wiry, dodgy-looking rope bridges above rushing torrents of white water. As we grew accustomed to the curious stares of the locals, and the occasional child asking for biscuits or candy, our group exited into wide open farm spaces, where green fields of mustard seed and grain stretched out under the foothills in the distance.

Entiat Mountains, Glacier Peak Wilderness

Entiat Mountains, Glacier Peak Wilderness

The Entiat Mountains, on the eastern side of the wilderness, generally have warmer weather and earlier snow melt than western slopes. Often these trails are open by mid-July. In 2011 the snow stayed on the trail deep into the summer on most west facing trails so having east-side routes on your radar is always a good thing!

The Beautiful Benefits of Night Hiking

The Beautiful Benefits of Night Hiking

The first thing to overcome for new night hikers may be their own psychology. At some point, you’re going to walk by some tree or bush and startle something sleeping in there, or you might spook some rabbits in a hole or a snake under a rock just off the trail and see them dart across your path suddenly. Relax and keep a level head, remember that you’re the one who just scared the bejesus out of some animal, they are not stalking you like a mugger in a dark city alley.

Rock Art: Discovering Moab’s Petroglyphs

Rock Art: Discovering Moab’s Petroglyphs

After half an hour of hiking I was well out of town, flanked only by the canyon wall that borders Arches National Park. The remains of Moab’s mining past were everywhere, from the rusted railroad tracks that ran parallel to the highway, to old mining carts, now long abandoned, rusting seamlessly with the color of the desert.

Chambers Bay

Chambers Bay

Set off towards the water along the paved trail. You will pass a small dog park to your left as you approach a viewing platform that projects over Puget Sound. You will enjoy vistas of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains as you traverse the length of this elevated walkway.

Cirque of the Towers, Wind River Range, Wyoming

Cirque of the Towers, Wind River Range, Wyoming

The Winds offer a wide range of treks, long and short, on trail and off. I decided to head straight for Cirque of the Towers. The guide made it clear that the Cirque was the premiere destination for rock climbers in the Rockies and that it would be full of people, but the images I had seen captivated me. I figured it was probably busy for a reason!

Follow Me to Rinjani – Hiking Indonesia’s Active Volcano

Follow Me to Rinjani – Hiking Indonesia’s Active Volcano

Above the clouds, we sipped warm tea and watched the fluffy blanket of white burn yellow and orange before fading into black night. As darkness set in, a display of stars untouched by city lights opened above me.
