Embark on an adventure along the rugged Olympic coast as you hike south from Third Beach to Oil City. This trail is for the adventurous only: it involves harrowing ladder climbs, planning, and precise tide timing to pass around dangerous headlands. If possible, try to round all headlands on falling tides to ensure the safety of your backpacking group.

In late July last summer fourteen of us set out to cross the width of the Olympic Mountains. Seven travelled from the East and seven from the West. I was leading the group from the West and an old friend was leading the group from the East. To make it more interesting, we planned to meet in the middle for a day.

In order to really experience the eagles, there are a number of wild places you can easily seek them out and observe their behaviors, as well as get close enough to grab a photo or two.
