I’m a big fan of showers in my daily life, but I also love camping and backpacking. This summer I’ve been doing a lot of camping— less for fun and more because I got a job at a ski resort two and a half hours from home. Being a server, I can’t look dirty, but because I sleep in my car and in tents half of the week, showering isn’t always an option. Recently I invested in some no-water cleaning options. One that I have been using throughout this summer is called CleanLife No Rinse Shampoo. It’s a shampoo that you douse your hair in and then towel dry. No water is needed, which is really nice, and is a quick option for semi-clean hair if you don’t have access to a shower.
I’ve used CleanLife No Rinse Shampoo a few times now and have had reasonably good results. I naturally have normal to greasy hair, so when I use it I lather, dry and repeat. After that, my hair looks and feels fairly clean. While nothing can replace a real shower for making you feel clean, this stuff does make your hair feel and look cleaner and less greasy. If you don’t dry it well after applying it, however, it feels like when you don’t fully rinse shampoo out of your hair with regular shampoo— so make sure you dry well after use.
Pros
• Fast and easy to use
• Doesn’t leave a chalky feel like some dry shampoos can
• Removes dirt and grease
• Doesn’t require water, so perfect for hikes or campsites without running water
• Biodegradable
Cons
• Leaves hair wet (because you have to completely soak your hair with the shampoo), so not a good option if you are going to be out in the cold
• You have to use it a couple times to really see a big difference
• Doesn’t leave hair feeling as clean as a shower, but I wouldn’t really expect it to
Overall, I would recommend this product— especially when you’re on multi-day treks and not looking to end up with dreads. It’s small and easy to pack in and use. In cases like mine, however, where you really want to look clean, I would not recommend using this more than one day in a row because it does not completely wash your hair. Find water to wash in and use this when you have absolutely no access.
