Last weekend Seattle Backpackers Magazine attended the Gear Up Expo at Comcast Arena in Everett. Our booth was buzzing and busy, we were happy so many of you stopped by to say hi.

The expo itself covered every outdoor sport you can imagine, from SCUBA and paddle boarding, to backpacking and mountaineering. There were seminars  about things like “Smart Packing for Backpacking” as well as some presentations of faraway places, like “Cultural Travel and Inspiration” and  “Machu Picchu and Beyond.” There was photography and gear raffle, a passport crawl and lots of local outdoor experts on hand to answer questions, tell stories or just chat. Most of all, it was for the public, for anyone who loves the outdoors.

One of the highlights of the whole show was meeting Jim Whittaker and hearing his keynote speech on Saturday. He was present all weekend long, attending his booth and signing copies of his latest book. He also kindly posed for photo ops while his wife, Dianne Roberts, a photographer and climber, herself, took many of the photos with attendees cameras.

This was the inaugural year for the Gear Up Expo. Comcast arena served very well for the function, with easy public access, as well as great access for booth setup, this location will most likely be selected for next year’s Gear Up Expo. With over 150 booths and workshops, it was a full and fun weekend offering stories, inspiration and ideas. We’re already looking forward to a bigger show next year. Here is the weekend in photos.
