L.L. Bean Polartec Power Stretch Hoodie

The L.L. Bean Polartec Power Stretch Hoodie is a great mid-layer for doing everything from running errands around town to cross-country skiing or snowshoeing.

I have not taken this hoodie off since receiving it to test several months ago, and I’ve pulled it out of the dirty clothes bin several times to wear it just one more time. This hoodie has become a staple of my winter wardrobe both on and off the trails.

I did have my doubts about how this top would perform when I wore it cross-country skiing sandwiched between a base layer and outer shell when it was well below -15 degrees. But, throughout several days of skiing in frigid temperatures, this hoodie kept me warm without being too warm out on the trails.

This hoodie is made from a polyester/spandex blend to form Polartec power stretch fabric, which is warm and soft on the inside but moisture and wind resistant on the outside. This blend makes it nice and stretchy without compromising warmth.

Bottom Line

Overall, this is a great hoodie that can be worn for just about any adventure.

Pros

  • Versatile clothing that can be worn for a multitude of different activities is always a winner because it means less clothing taking up closet space. This hoodie looks great with jeans, hiking pants, leggings and down skirt or ski pants - and both and off the trails
  • This hoodie is warm enough to be a good mid-layer but also warm enough to wear as an outer jacket when the temperature is above 35 degrees
  • This top comes packed with plenty of storage space. There are two large zippered pockets in the front and one smaller zippered pocket on the left hand sleeve, which is the perfect size for a mobile phone
  • As a Mom, I constantly have two young children rubbing all sorts of things like dirt, boogers and food on me. I was worried that this jacket would stain easily, especially after a post-Halloween chocolate mishap. Instead, it seems to do a good job of repelling any gross or sticky things that come my way. When I do get around to washing it, I just throw it in with everything else and haven't had any problems with the fleece balling up

Cons

  • This top is just a little bit too bulky and boxy for me. This is especially noticeable when it’s worn under an outer shell
  • If I’m wearing this top as an outer layer, I like the option of pulling a hood up over my head. But, when I’m wearing it as a mid-layer underneath a shell, the hood just gets in the way. While the hood is designed to fit under a helmet, I’d love the option of having a mid-layer of this quality without a hood
  • Personally, I’m not a fan of thumb holes. If it’s cold out, most of us are wearing gloves anyway, and the thumb hole when not being used is just one more way to let cold air in
