This flat, 2.5-mile loop hike is a great choice for family hikers, and those simply interested in exploring one of the area’s most curious natural attractions.
Even if you embarked on the hike simply to get away from people, it never hurts to chime out a greeting and nod your head to another hiker who has ventured onto the same trail as you.
But, the real question is how do you maintain motivation when family adventures turn into family “disasters” when a trip doesn’t go quite as planned?
The trail then climbs over rocky outcroppings and through thick forests, offering numerous small creek crossings. The trail ends with a sign that marks the unmaintained trail to Joe Lake and Alaska Lake. Glimpse the beautiful mountain meadow before adventuring onward or following the trail home.
“Pack it out” isn’t only for back country campers; anyone who uses the trails can take something from this. I find this to be one of the things that bugs me the most. I hate walking a trail and finding garbage left behind by other hikers. When heading out for a hike remember to throw a plastic bag in your pack so that you have a place to put your garbage.
First of all, those long or remote trails you used to frequent shouldn’t be the first thing that comes to mind. You want to start slow and build up, I would start with a nice slow 2 to 3 km (1-2 miles) hike. From there, you can ether add more distance or pick up the speed.
If you’re looking for an exciting family-friendly hike right off of Highway 2, look no further than the Heybrook Lookout Trail. The trail is rigorous and steep, but rewards hikers for every step with a stunning view at the very end.
