It was hard to believe that the first leg of the expedition was actually behind us. The morning after bagging Isolation, we headed down into Crawford Notch and met up with a group of ladies from home who donated money towards the expedition. They had driven up to New Hampshire from New Jersey to summit Mt. Jackson with us on a day hike.
Going in, we had been well aware that the Whites had a reputation for being fierce mountains despite that they lacked the height of their western counterparts. So far, they had not failed to live up to that reputation.
Next came the Presidentials, famous for their world record windspeeds and violent, unpredictable weather. As I made my way down and into Pinkham Notch, I could not shake the sinking feeling that was wrenching my gut.
So with that in mind, we will appreciate that we can still climb, for we are fortunate enough not to have ALS. And so we will continue to climb in honor of those who do, beginning with the forty-eight and on, as far and as high as we must in order to bring a nation behind them.
Hope on the Horizon has granted me two journeys. The obvious journey is of course through the White Mountains to achieve the 48 highest summits in a single trip. It was the starting point of the entire project, and the journey that has been anticipated all along.
