What if you can’t even get to the mountains regularly? Get as close as you can. I don’t have a gym membership, so I run stairs and hills in my neighborhood. A set of bleacher stairs is usually pretty easy to find. And in the Seattle area, you’re probably not too far from a good running hill.
You can never start too soon. You can start too late. I would suggest starting training for a moderate backpacking or fourteener event no less than two months before the trip. Obviously this will vary greatly depending on the length and difficulty of the trip, and your overall fitness level.
