Over the past year, Sierra Designs has become one of my favorite outdoor gear companies. Why? Because they’re designing gear smarter than the other guys.[Read More…]
Since the time that I was 8 years old and went on my first backpacking trip, I never took a pillow camping. I typically just stuffed an empty sack with extra clothes or a jacket and used that as a pillow. The pocket knife is not just a tool for backpackers and outdoorsman but something far more innate. From that first exhilarating moment we hold our own pocket knife to the way we absentmindedly swipe it off the dresser before leaving for work, the pocket knife can be as routine an item as wallets and keys and perhaps just as essential to getting through the day. All you need in order to bake tasty muffin treats on a trek is an ultralight Bobcat system, which weighs less than half a pound, including the pot and a lightweight baking pan. The only weight you’ll have to carry over and above the ultralight cook kit is 3.1 oz (89 g) for a small (4″/10.2 cm) baking pan. You’ll be baking tasty treats in no time!
The Alps Ultra-Light Air Pad is a great choice for comfort, durability, insulation and value. For the recreational 3-season camper and backpacker the quality and price are unbeatable. I prefer this pad over the Therm-A-Rest pad that I have used (and loved) for years.
Brooks Range calls it a Quick Tent, but without a floor, dedicated poles, zippers, and a mesh enclosure I find it hard to call this a tent. I prefer the term shelter. There is room to sit up inside and plenty of room for two people or one person and two packs and then you can still cook inside too.
