The women’s Valkyrie Hoodie LT by Triple Aught Design is an attractive, comfortable (albeit a bit pricey) lightweight fleece jacket. It comes in five sizes, from extra small to extra large and three colors: black, ME Green and UE Grey. It features four pockets – two hand warmer pockets and two bicep pockets that have media ports inside for routing headphones.

The Valkyrie fits true to size and is soft and comfortable. I loved the ME Green color of the jacket I tested. It is form-fitting in a good way – not too tight or too loose. It is figure flattering, not bulky, and is clearly designed to be a women’s jacket instead of just a smaller version of a men’s jacket. You can wear it around town without people’s first thought being, “Hmmm, looks like she just got back from a camping trip.”

The placement of the pockets is great! The waist pockets are perfect for warming your hands and the upper arm pockets are just the right size for a cell phone or energy bar. All of the pockets are also lined with mesh, which helps slightly with breathability when they are open.

At first I was surprised that there was no drawstring on the hood to tighten it. However, the main zipper comes up high enough on the neck/chin to make the hood fit snugly around the face. I never worried about it blowing off my head. Plus, I think it looks nicer without the bunchy look of a cinched-down drawstring.

I found it to be most comfortable to wear when not engaging in extended, high intensity activities. For example, it comes with me on all of my climbing adventures because it is an excellent belay duty jacket. The Valkyrie was rather warm to hike in for long periods of time, in all but the most frigid of conditions. As it is made from Polartec Wind Pro material, it also repels light precipitation well, though I would recommend bringing a hard layer for serious downpours.

  • Stylish in fit and color; flattering.
  • Soft, fuzzy fabric feels nice against skin.
  • Thumb hole cuffs!

  • The armpit vents did not ventilate very well. When I heated up, it started feeling pretty wet and stuffy. I would prefer a larger, zippered vent rather than the four holes in the arm pits, which did not seem as effective.
  • The main zipper was hard to operate. I had to try several times to get it zipped up each time I put it on. It was also hard to open and close the upper arm pockets without stretching the sleeves very tight.
  • Although the built-in hood visor was nice when I put it on, it laid down a little awkwardly against my back when not in use.

Final Thoughts

This jacket has kept me warm on hiking trips with my husband throughout the wild lands that surround our home.  Although I did find myself quickly overheating at times, around camp and during trail breaks this jacket kept me warm and comfy. It is also stylish and durable enough to wear on my hectic morning commutes on the infamous DC area subways. If you are looking for a lightweight polar fleece jacket that can do double duty both on the town and in the backcountry, the Valkyrie deserves a close look.
